Global Citizen Scholar Mission
After reflecting on my values, strengths, competencies, My Global Citizen Scholar Mission is as follows: I am driven by my passionate beliefs in growth, love, and curiosity. I pursue these passions by utilizing my core strengths of being futuristic, strategic, and a developer. I plan to live out these values through opportunities where I am learning and creating to achieve innovation and action that impacts education systems and the environment. To do so, I will seek opportunities to make idea-driven change and analysis-driven change. When I face challenges or obstacles along the way, I will remember to maintain a hopeful outlook and keep things in perspective.
As someone who is passionate about many things, this mission helps me clarify what I value most, how my strengths support my values, and how my values determine what I want to achieve. Since I value growth most, what I learn and gain in the process of accomplishing my goals (or falling short) is extremely important to me. This causes me to set my goals for myself extremely high, for even when I fail, I understand that there are still positive outcomes of the situation. My high goals also tie in to my strength of futuristic thinking. I believe that I am capable of accomplishing many things and solving many problems, which motivates me to work hard and think about things in different ways.
As an engineering major, its easy to see the possible applications of my global citizen scholar mission. Engineering is really a mix of idea-driven change and analysis driven-change which excites me. I can also use my strengths for innovation within and outside of my career in engineering. One thing specifically I want to impact in my life is the environment. This has been one of the major reasons that I decided to try to make the switch from Aerospace Engineering to Mechanical Engineering. Although I’m not sure where I’ll end up in my career or whether I will ever have a job focused on environmental issues, but I knew Mechanical Engineering would be a far better fit for me than Aerospace Engineering if I ever wanted a job focused on sustainability.
One goal I have that fits into my mission, is to start a non-profit. Although this sounds like an extremely high goal to achieve as a college student, I genuinely feel I can achieve this within the next few years. There are many things I’m passionate about, but one specifically is providing equal opportunities to education. There are many ways I could try to help accomplish this that I haven’t even thought of yet, but one idea I have is to start an ACT/SAT tutoring program for those who cannot afford such testing preparation services. I think standardized testing gives an unfair advantage to those who can afford tutoring and to take the tests multiple times. As someone who spent a lot of time in high school learning the strategies for ACT, I feel that I could help improve someone’s test scores. If the program were to be well-funded, it could also pay for resource materials and more attempts at the ACT or SAT. This would allow these students to have the same opportunities as their peers to help them get into colleges and receive scholarships. I have yet to start taking steps to start a non-profit, but I could begin by looking into how the University of Cincinnati could assist me in starting a non-profit or a program for students.
Overall, I feel my global citizen scholar mission truly reflects the path I’m trying to head down and the goals I want to accomplish using the strengths I have. I feel that there is a strong connection between my values, strengths, competencies, and goals which will help me make progress towards my mission. I hope to use this mission to focus on what is important to me, and make sure I live out my values throughout my life.
